12 June 2024

BonelliErede announces the appointment of Andrea Carlevaris (Rome) and Paolo Di Giovanni (Milan) as the new co-heads of the firm’s international arbitration practice, which was founded by Prof. Antonio Crivellaro (of counsel and current international arbitration team member).

Andrea Carlevaris first joined BonelliErede in 2003 and was a partner there from 2010 to 2012. He then served as Secretary General of the ICC’s International Court of Arbitration for 5 years before rejoining the firm as a partner in 2017. He acts as an arbitrator and counsel in international arbitration proceedings, dealing mainly with arbitrations related to international contracts – especially concerning construction, energy and M&A – international investments, private and public international law, and international civil procedure.

Paolo Di Giovanni joined BonelliErede in 2000 and was made partner in 2012 after gaining international experience through secondment to Slaughter and May and 20 Essex Street. He focuses on international arbitration and litigation, with an emphasis on M&A, construction, energy infrastructure projects, transport, gas supply and pricing review, environmental liability, and international corruption.

Carlevaris and Di Giovanni lead a team of 20 professionals across EMEA, including 5 partners and 2 of counsel, with a proven track record in a wide range of practice areas and a deep understanding of international legal systems. Last year, BonelliErede strengthened its ranks with the addition of Richard Samuel – a partner with extensive expertise in international arbitration – to the firm’s London office. Furthermore, in line with its development strategy, the team expanded its presence in the UAE and the Middle East, with an associate currently seconded to the firm’s Dubai office.

Andrea Carlevaris had this to say about his appointment: “In recent years, BonelliErede’s international arbitration team has strengthened its position as a leading international player – not just a European one – that can handle arbitration proceedings in both common law and civil law jurisdictions and that is particularly active in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. I am delighted to take on this new position and to lead a group of colleagues who possess extraordinary human and professional qualities”.

Paolo Di Giovanni added: “It is a great pleasure for me to take on this important position at the helm of such an impressive and diverse group of highly talented professionals. We look to the future with confidence and aim to continue expanding our practice internationally”.

BonelliErede’s Managing Partner, Eliana Catalano, and Chairman, Massimiliano Danusso, commented: “We thank Andrea and Paolo for their enthusiasm in accepting this appointment and for their continued commitment to the firm. We are confident that they will be an inspiration for the whole team and will continue to develop the firm’s international arbitration practice for our clients, wherever they operate in the world”.
