From in-house to law firm: Antongiulio's story

What was your journey to BonelliErede?

I was born in Foggia in 1988, and after graduating from secondary school in 2006 – which by the way coincided with Italy winning the World Cup – I moved to Milan to study at Bocconi University. I graduated in law with a thesis in administrative law and still practise that area of law today.

My professional journey has been the opposite to what law graduates usually take in that I started my career in-house. Immediately after graduating, I received a job offer in the legal affairs department of Expo 2015 S.p.A. – the management company of the Universal Exposition of Milan – which proved to be a unique experience from a personal and professional standpoint. At Expo, I dealt with the aspects of urban planning law related to the construction of the exhibition site, and the pavilions of the participating countries.

During my approximately six years at the company, I was able to learn what clients expect from external legal counsel: problem solving and business-oriented advice. My experience motivated me to work as a practitioner, which allows me to broaden my technical skills and develop more commercial skills.

What is your job now?

I’m a senior associate in the 20-strong administrative law practice, which is coordinated by the partner Luca Perfetti.

We provide in- and out-of-court assistance in relation to all areas of administrative law: procurement and concessions, public services, environmental law, urban planning and construction.

I mainly deal with urban planning, construction and territorial governance, especially in relation to development projects and increasing the value of real estate. I’m also a member of the Real Estate and Environmental Sustainability Focus Teams.

BonelliErede has given me the opportunity to be involved in extremely interesting transactions, especially in the real estate sector. I work closely with professionals from all the other legal teams and thus have a complete view of all phases and aspects of each assignment. The synergy between depts is in fact the added value our law firm brings: having the focus teams means that clients can always count on a complete and multidisciplinary service.

What do you like most about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is that, in a real estate deal, there’s a tangible result – be it the development of a project from scratch or the sale of an existing building.

This ties in with my passion for photography and my preference to photograph urban landscapes. Photographing a building that you’ve studied broadens your perception and gives the photo symbolic meaning, in that it tells a piece of your own story.
