Port restrictions during the Covid-19 emergency
1 April 2020

The Covid-19 pandemic and the measures adopted by the vast majority of states to reduce/prevent the spread of the virus continue to have an unprecedented impact on the shipping and transport industry. The repercussions that the closure of borders and port restrictions throughout the world are having on commercial contracts, the cruise industry, crew changes, the volume of maritime and general aviation traffic are creating major challenges for operators, as are all the uncertainties that this global crisis carries with it. Indeed, the responses from shipping and transport operators to date are fragmented and far from definitive; unsurprisingly given the constantly evolving regulatory framework due to the increasing number of urgent measures and decrees being issued.

Our Shipping & Transport Focus Team, in collaboration with our Covid-19 Task Force, analyzes the main measures – both general and concerning individual port systems – adopted by various countries so far here.
