On 29 March 2017, the UK notified the European Council of its intention to withdraw from the EU, pursuant to Article 50 of the Treaty of the European Union (Article 50). This starts the formal process of the UK’s exit from the EU, kick‑starting a two year period for the UK and the EU to negotiate the terms of the UK’s exit.
